Dating from the early 1970s, Volvo Cars' commitment to the environment covers the entire lifecycle of the car, from design, engineering and production to useful life, service and recycling.
Efficient energy and resource utilization and reduced emissions is in focus, as is an allergy-friendly in-car environment and during 2008, the DRIVe sub-brand was launched as a symbol for Volvo Cars' environmental commitment.
DRIVe covers not only CO2 and fuel consumption, but everything from production to recycling. It reflects our commitment to sustainable mobility and the drive towards zero emissions, and represents our promise for continued improvement.
The DRIVe versions of the C30 Sports Coupe, S40 Saloon and V50 Sportswagon have class leading CO2 emissions of 99g/KM meaning the UK road fund tax is £0 per year and without compromising on either performance or comfort.
Volvo has extended its DRIVe range to include 7 models after dramatically reducing CO2 levels and increasing fuel efficiency - with class leading CO2 emissions and fuel consumption as follows:
| Model | Engine | CO² | Fuel Consumption (combined cicle) |
| C30 Start/Stop | DRIVe | 99 g | 74.3 mpg |
| S40 Start/Stop | DRIVe | 99 g | 74.3 mpg |
| V50 Start/Stop | DRIVe | 99 g | 74.3 mpg |
| V70 | DRIVe | 119 g | 62.8 mpg |
| S80 | DRIVe | 119 g | 62.8 mpg |
| XC60 | D3 DRIVe | 154 g | 47.9 mpg |
| XC70 | D3 DRIVe | 154 g | 47.9 mpg |
All DRIVe models are equipped with a conventional diesel engine and manual gearbox optimized for extra-low fuel consumption. These cars are also tailored specifically for low rolling resistance and reduced air drag.
